Need Results for Legal Proceedings?
Standard at-home Sibling Test kits generally cannot be used for court proceedings or other official purposes. For court-admissible results accepted by Canadian courts and government agencies (e.g., IRCC), choose our Legal DNA Sibling Test.
How is a Legal DNA Sibling Test different?
Legal DNA tests follow a strict chain-of-custody process that private, at-home kits cannot provide:
- Verification of government-issued photo ID
- Submission of passport-style photos
- Fingerprinting at the time of sample collection
- Witnessed specimen collection by an impartial third-party witness.

Grandparent DNA Testing
When direct parent-child testing isn’t possible, our DNA Grandparent Test provides the answers you need. This specialized genetic analysis determines the biological relationship between a potential grandparent and grandchild with scientific precision, offering families clarity during difficult or uncertain times.
Ideal when you need to establish:
- Whether your son or daughter is the biological parent of a child
- Grandparent-grandchild relationships for legal or personal reasons
- Family connections when the parent is deceased, missing, or refuses testing
- Biological relationships for inheritance, custody, or immigration cases

Establish Grandparent-Grandchild Relationships with Confidence.
DNA Tests Direct is committed to providing accurate, private, and reliable DNA testing services for families across Canada. Here’s what sets our grandparent DNA test apart:
- Accredited Canadian Laboratory: All testing is performed exclusively within Canada, ensuring your DNA samples and sensitive genetic information are protected by Canadian privacy laws and never leave the country.
- Fast and Secure Results: Receive your confidential results through our secure online portal in just 1-2 business days from when our Canadian lab receives your samples.
- Comprehensive Analysis: Our laboratory analyzes up to 27 genetic markers to deliver the most accurate statistical assessment of the potential grandparent-grandchild relationship.
- Dual-Process Testing: Every test undergoes our dual-process analysis, meaning your samples are independently tested twice to ensure maximum accuracy.
- Testing Both Grandparents (Recommended): If possible, testing both paternal grandparents (the alleged father’s mother and father) along with the grandchild can provide more conclusive results than testing only one grandparent. Including the child’s mother is also highly beneficial if the test aims to establish a link through the paternal lineage.

Understanding Your DNA Grandparent Test Results
Your DNA Tests Direct Grandparent Test report will provide a Combined Kinship Index (or Likelihood Ratio). This statistical value indicates how likely it is that the tested individual(s) are biologically related as grandparent(s) to the grandchild, compared to being unrelated.
Grandparent DNA testing relies on the fact that a child inherits half of their DNA from their mother and half from their father, who in turn inherited half of their DNA from each of their parents (the child’s grandparents).
- A higher Kinship Index (significantly above 1.0) suggests a greater likelihood of the tested grandparent-grandchild relationship. The stronger the index, the more compelling the evidence.
- A Kinship Index close to 1.0 can be inconclusive, meaning the genetic evidence doesn’t strongly confirm or deny the relationship based on the tested individuals alone.
- A lower Kinship Index (significantly below 1.0) suggests it’s less likely the individuals share the tested grandparent-grandchild relationship.
The conclusiveness of a grandparent test is significantly improved by testing more related individuals. For instance, testing the child, the child’s mother, and one paternal grandparent is good; testing the child, the child’s mother, and both paternal grandparents is even better for establishing paternity through the grandfather. Our Canadian-based client support team is available to guide you and help interpret your results.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a DNA Grandparent Test and when would I need one?
A DNA Grandparent Test determines the likelihood that an alleged grandparent is biologically related to their grandchild. This test is particularly valuable for Canadians when the connecting parent (the child of the grandparent/parent of the grandchild) is unavailable for testing due to death, absence, or unwillingness to participate. Common scenarios include establishing biological relationships for inheritance matters, immigration cases requiring proof of familial relationships, or situations where a grandparent wishes to confirm whether their child is actually the parent of their alleged grandchild.
How accurate is your DNA Grandparent Test?
Our DNA Grandparent Test provides a statistical likelihood rather than the definitive results of a paternity test. The test analyzes up to 27 genetic markers through dual-process testing in our accredited Canadian laboratory. Because grandchildren share approximately 25% of their DNA with each grandparent, results are presented as a Combined Kinship Index showing how likely the grandparent relationship is compared to no relationship. Including both grandparents and/or the available parent significantly improves accuracy.
Can the DNA Grandparent Test be shipped to multiple addresses?
If test participants live in different cities or countries, we can split the DNA test kit and ship components to separate addresses. Each kit part is individually barcoded for secure tracking, and testing begins once all samples reach our laboratory.
To request a split kit, include the following in the “Additional Information” section at checkout:
“Please send Person A’s kit to [Name, Address] and Person B’s kit to [Name, Address].”
Note: Additional shipping fees apply for multi-address orders.
Is this test legally admissible in Canadian courts?
For legal matters such as court proceedings, child custody, support cases, or inheritance claims, you will need to order the Legal DNA Test. This test requires a chain of custody procedure to ensure the results are admissible in court. The process includes having DNA samples collected by an impartial third party, proper identification of participants, and samples being directly sent to the testing laboratory.
Does the DNA test kit expire?
No, the DNA test kits do not have an expiration date and can be stored indefinitely before sample collection. However, once a sample is collected, it’s recommended to send the kit back to our laboratory for testing within 3 months to ensure the best results.
What will my DNA grandparent test tell me?
When a DNA Grandparentage test is performed, the autosomal STR profiles of the grandchild and alleged grandparent are obtained and compared. A statistical analysis is performed based on the match type typically expected for true grandchild/grandparent pairs and a “Combined Kinship Index” value is obtained. The value is compared against the following chart:
Combined Kinship Indexes and their verbal equivalent:
Combined Kinship Index >10000 = Practically proven
Combined Kinship Index from >1000 to 10000 = Highly likely
Combined Kinship Index from >100 to 1000 = Very likely
Combined Kinship Index from >10 to 100 = Likely
Combined Kinship Index from >1 to 10 = Slightly more likely than unlikely
Combined Kinship Index of 1 = Inconclusive
Combined Kinship Index from 0.1 to <1 = Slightly more unlikely than likely
Combined Kinship Index from 0.01 to <0.1 = Unlikely
Combined Kinship Index <0.01 = Highly unlikely
Is the collection process difficult?
The collection process is extremely simple and painless. Your kit includes easy-to-use cheek swabs (similar to Q-tips) that you gently rub against the inside of the cheek for about 30 seconds. This collects enough DNA for testing without any blood or needles. The process works for everyone, including infants. Our kit includes clear instructions, and our customer service team is available if you need assistance.
How will I get my DNA grandparent test results?
When you activate your DNA grandparent test kit online, you will have a secure online login to check test status and download your DNA grandparent test results as soon as they are ready.
